How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Our music
video, digipak and the advert have many things that link each media product
with each other. The biggest link between the media products is the link with
nature. The music video includes lots of shots of greenery, such as shots of
trees to set the scene outside of Chelsea’s house, and shots of Chelsea
singing, laying and walking around in a field. To make sure the link was
prominent, we decided to take the photos for our ancillary texts in the same
places and on the same day we filmed shots of our music video. The front cover
of the digipak includes a picture of Chelsea on a field, linking it with shots
from our music video. The pictures on our magazine adverts have trees in the
background. The landscape advert shows Chelsea surrounded by leaves and
branches coming from nearby trees, and the portrait advert shows Chelsea
leaning on a tree.
Something
that links the landscape advert and the music video is that, in the background
of the advert, you can slightly see the exterior of the house from the music
video. In the music video, we filmed both exterior shots and interior shots of
the house, but on the advert, all you can see is the exterior of the house.
This helps link the products, because someone may recognise the house in the
advert as the house from the music video.
After doing
research for our magazine adverts, we saw that a lot of adverts had the album
front cover on the advert somewhere. We decided this would be a good way to
link our products together, and so we put the album cover on our adverts too.
This helps to link the two products together as once people see the advert,
they will then know what to look for in the shop if they want to buy it.
Another
thing that links all three products is the font used on the text. We used the
same font every time we had to write the titles of the song and the artist’s
name, to keep it consistent, which was used across all of our media products.
It was used at the beginning of our music video, on the front cover of our
digipak and on both of our magazine adverts. We also used it for other text
that was important. For example, we used it for our track list and the title of
‘acknowledgements’ on our digipak, and used it for ‘Out Now’ on our magazine advert. This helps for people to link our
products together, as they may see two of our media products and automatically
link them together due to using the same font.
An obvious
thing that links all of our products together is that Chelsea is in each
product. She is the star of the music video, she is on both of the magazine
adverts and she is also on the front cover of the album. Some artists do not
always show their faces on all products, and so it does not link well together,
but having the artist on every media product helps to link them all together.
In each of
the products, Chelsea is wearing the same outfit. As we took the photos and
filmed the music video on the same day, Chelsea was wearing the same outfit for
both. She is wearing a casual costume that we planned for her to wear
throughout scenes of her when she is walking through the fields. This helps
link the products together.
