Evaluation Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research and Planning

I used a few different media technologies when researching and planning. The main technologies used were YouTube and Google. I used YouTube to research other music videos and I used Google to research for the digipak and magazine adverts. On YouTube we searched for songs by female artists, such as Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Adele. We also searched for Little Mix, although they’re not a single singer but a group, as their female and sing pop songs. On Google, we went on to Google Images to search for different digipak and magazine adverts for female singers, to see what they had put on theirs and how they had set it out. When making the audience research, we used Web 2.0, which consisted of SurveyMonkey, Facebook and Instagram. SurveyMonkey is a website to create surveys, and so we used this for our creating our audience research questionnaires. We then shared the questionnaires onto Facebook and Instagram so we could get some responses. We also used Facebook to communicate with each other, when we were not at school and needed to communicate. When first listening to all of Chelsea’s songs, to see which we would use, we used both YouTube and SoundCloud to listen to different songs. Once we chose the song, I downloaded it onto my iPhone from YouTube, from a download app, so I could listen to the song whenever I wanted, to get used to it. I also used my iPhone to take notes when planning the music video and ancillary texts. The last thing we used was Microsoft Word to make and create our shooting schedule.

Construction
For the construction of our media products, we used a range of media technologies to help with the creation of each product. For the music video, we used iMovie on Mac computers, and digital cameras and tripods. For our ancillary texts we mainly used Photoshop but we also used the digital camera and a website named dafont. The digital cameras and tripod were to film clips for our music video, which we then saved onto multiple SD cards. We then transferred the video clips from the SD card to the Mac computer, so we could download them onto iMovie. We put the video clips onto iMovie so we could then edit the clips together, to make our music video. We also used it to make colour corrections, such as making a dark clip brighter, and also to put titles onto our music video. We also imported the song, Meant to Be, from a USB stick to the Mac computers so we could add the song onto iMovie to help us edit our music video to the song. For our ancillary texts, we used Photoshop to make both of the adverts and the digipak. We searched on Google Images for a template of a digipak and then put it onto Photoshop so it was easier to know where to add things, such as the front cover and back cover, and additional inserts. We used a digital camera to take pictures for our front cover and for the background pictures of the adverts, and then transferred them onto Photoshop. To be able to use the same font for all of our products, we used a dafont to download a font and then use on both Photoshop and iMovie to put on all products. We also used Google Images to find and save logos for Syco and Sony, as they were the management we decided Chelsea was going to have. We decided on Syco and Sony after looking up managements on Wikipedia. We then put them on photoshop to add to both our digipak and our adverts. We also used google to search up about copyright, and what we should write for it.

Evaluation

We used many Web 2.0 technologies for the evaluation of our media products. The main technology we used was Blogger/Blogspot. This was to create our blogs so we could write about the process of how we made our media products. I used Microsoft a few times in the evaluation. I used Microsoft PowerPoint to make the presentation for postmoderism at the beginning of my blog, and I used Microsoft Word to first write out my evaluation question, and then I later added them to my blog and I used Word to record our feedback of our media products, and I used an iPhone to communicate with one of our respondent as we didn’t have time to meet face to face. We also used a sound recorder to record the artist’s feedback, and then put on our blog. To be able to put our storyboard onto our blogs, we had to use a scanner to scan them onto a computer and then put onto our blogs. Personally, for my blog, I like to add a lot of gifs and to do this I need to use different websites to make them. I use YouTube to get up the videos I need, such as music videos, and then I used a website named giphy to create my gifs. I then save them to my laptop at home and put them on my blog, wherever they are needed. To edit my gifs, cropping them for example, I used another website named ezgif.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Feedback is important to artists to ensure that they bring out the right media products that will help sell their music. If someone likes a music video, or takes interest in a magazine ad, or digipak, they be more inclined to buy the product than if they just heard the music. If artists, or their team, were to ignore feedback, they may not sell as well because they would not be selling something that intrigues people and makes them want to buy it.

Target Audience
We decided our target audience for our media products was from the ages of 14 – 30, and so we tried to get as much feedback from this age group as we could. We got two respondents from this age group, one being the artist of the song and one being an 18 year old female. We also decided to get feedback from people of other ages, to compare and contrast and to see if we picked the right target audience age range. These two respondents were aged 62 and 63, and so were about 30 years out of our age range, and we have learned that this age range was not right for our target audience, which so far confirms our first thoughts. Both 60 year old respondents said if they saw the digipak in shops, they would not immediately be inclined to buy the product, the 63 year old respondent (respondent 2) saying because it’s promoting an image of a younger audience. Respondent 2 also said that she would be compelled to buy the album, from looking at the magazine advert, if she was thinking of buying for a younger person than herself. This confirms that we chose near enough the right age range in our target audience, which means there may be more chance of sales to this audience.

Music Video
From our feedback, we have found out that from watching the music video, people can see that it’s a pop music video. An 18 year old respondent (Respondent 1) said she thought it was pop due to the bright colours. This means that people who enjoy pop music videos may want to buy the song or buy/watch the music video which increases the artist’s sales.
We also found out that our camera shots were good, especially our beginning camera shots. Our 62 year old respondent (respondent 3) told us that he liked that everything was in focus, and both respondent 1 and 2 said they like our beginning shots, respondent 1 saying that it fits the song very well and respondent 2 saying that it’s very atmospheric. Respondent 2 also liked the angles of when Chelsea was lying down on the field.
The majority of people liked the editing when the flowers gradually wilted and then started to blossom again, with respondent 1 and 2 saying that it’s some of their favourite parts. Respondent 1, 2 and 3 all said they liked that part, respondent 2 adding that itrepresented a love that is over and maybe a chance to start again and respondent 1 later saying its symbolic of their love. Respondent 1 also saidthe editing goes to the beat of the song so that makes the music video even more enjoyable to watch. This shows that the way you edit is important when editing music videos together. If the watcher enjoys the music video, they may want to buy the song. Respondent 3 liked that the lip syncing was very good, and even liked the parts where Chelsea is singing due to this. This shows that when editing, you should make sure the song and the lip syncing are put in sync together. I’ve also seen on other music video comments on YouTube that people complain when lip syncing is off, such as on Little Mix’s music video, Touch.
Respondent 1 liked the mise-en-scene because it seemed natural as there was no ridiculous costumes or a setting that was irrelevant to the song being sung. Respondent 2 thought that the props (such as flowers) helped to tell the story. This shows that having props when doing a music video with a narrative, that props are important to show the story. The story needs to be understood otherwise people may be put off of the music video and so may be put off of buying the song. Respondent 3 gave some negative feedback, saying the inside scenery could have been done with better background, for example, it could have been done on something better than a kitchen worktop. This was a surprise because we thought that the kitchen worktop would have been a good place to film the flowers, as that was where we thought Chelsea would have placed them in the music video. This shows that maybe some more thought should have went into where we should have placed the flowers.
Respondent 2 said her least favourite part was where Chelsea was drinking from a wine bottle, as it looked unrealistic and thought that it would have been better in a wine glass. I wasn’t very surprised by this comment as it didn’t look very real and I would do it differently. Respondent 1 said she didn’t like the part where Chelsea was running around on the field as she didn’t understand the point of it. I was surprised by this comment as, when doing research, I found that a lot of music videos had parts where the artist breaks the narrative, which is what this was.

Digipak
Respondent 3 us that what he liked about the CD cover was that the background made Chelsea stand out as the background was a different colour than she was (as there was green grass behind her and she was wearing a blue/purple top). He also said he liked that the title stood out well as it was across dark colours and it itself was white. Respondent’s 1 and 2 also liked how clear the name is written on the cover, respondent 1 saying that it’s noticeable. This is an important part of the CD cover as the title needs to be able to be read, otherwise they may not know who or what the CD is for. Although, if this wasn’t the case, then because of the strong link to the music video, people should be able to guess what the song/CD this was. Respondent 1 commented on the fact that the rose Chelsea is holding on the front cover is from the music video, which is good because it shows that the video is very clearly linked with the digipak from this. Respondent 2 said she likes the angle in which Chelsea is looking because she is not looking into the camera.
Respondent 1 was the only one to comment with some negative feedback about the front cover. She said she didn’t like that the colours were dull as she expected it to have brighter colours. This may have been due to the fact that we made some colour correction in the music video to make it a little brighter, as it was a bit of a dull day outside. Maybe we should have thought to brighten up the pictures as well, and not just clips from the music video.
Respondent 1 was the only one to definitely say yes to buying the digipak, saying that she liked that it had an insert with lyrics on it and that it has an interesting front cover. This is very understandable as the target audience was for about 14 – 30 and respondent 1 was the only one to be in that age bracket, as respondent’s 2 and 3 were in their 60’s. Despite this, respondent 2 said she would still be intrigued as it’s very eye catching, but not actually buy it due to it promoting to a younger audience. Respondent 3 said he would not buy the digipak from looking at it unless he actually knew the song, but the cover would make him want to buy it more if he did know it.
All respondents said they thought the design of the digipak was as they expected. Respondent’s 1 and 2 both commented on the fact that the colour pink, and the rose was present, giving them the assumption that the song was about love.
Both respondent’s 2 and 3 said they liked that the lyrics of the song are included on the inserts, respondent 3 adding that it makes it easier to sing along. All respondent’s mentioned the acknowledgements, respondent 1 saying she liked the font used and respondent 2 saying that she liked it because it shows gratitude for everyone involved in the making of it.
There was mostly praise for the back cover of our digipak, with respondent 1 saying that she thought the logos and barcode were placed in a good place, and that she liked the pink/grey gradient, and respondent 2 also saying she likes the logos as they stand out. Unfortunately there was not all positive comments as respondent 1 said she didn’t like the track list due to it not being very exciting as it’s just there on the side, but then adding she does like the font. Maybe if we would have placed the track list in the middle of the cover, instead of on the side, it maybe would’ve looked better and less boring.

Magazine Adverts
All respondent’s mentioned they liked that there are logos of places where you can find the song. This is good because it means people may actually notice the logos and then go looking for the song on these websites and apps. Respondent 1 also said that she likes how the pictures of Chelsea are relating to the music video, adding that that’s what people memorise the most, so it gets people attention. This shows that linking the adverts to the music video may be useful, as people may recognise it and then it may remind them to buy the song, or may make them want to watch the music video again. Respondent 2 said she likes that it says ‘out now’ as it shows that it’s a new release.
Respondent 3 didn’t like the landscape advert too much as Chelsea isn’t very clearly shown on the background picture. Maybe we should have used a clearer picture, or a picture of her close up. We mostly used this picture because it matches with the theme of nature very well, which helps it to link to our other media products. Respondent 1 didn’t like the positioning of the CD cover and ‘Out Now’, adding that it should be more in the centre as it makes it more noticeable. This may have been useful, to put it into the centre and maybe make it bigger, to clearly show what the poster was advertising.
Respondent’s 1 and 2 both said they prefer the landscape advert, whereas respondent 3 said he prefers the portrait advert. Respondent 3’s reasoning for this was that the landscape one is not clear enough and does not look like an advert.’ He also said he doesn’t like that it’s bright on one side, and dark on the other. Respondent 2 disagreed with this, saying she liked the landscape one because of the sun shining through the trees (which is the reason for one side brighter and one side darker). Respondent 1 prefers the landscape advert as the mise-en-scene is much nicer.
Respondent 1 said only the landscape one would compel her to buy the album, as the portrait advert looks like an advertisement for clothes if you don’t notice the album. This shows that maybe we should’ve made the CD cover bigger and more in centre of the picture. Also, maybe we should have edited the photo a bit nicer. Respondent’s 2 and 3 said it probably wouldn’t compel them to buy the album, respondent 2 saying that it would only compel her to buy for someone younger than herself and respondent 3 saying that only the song itself would compel him to buy the song.

All three respondent’s said that the media product’s link together because Chelsea is clearly in all of them. This shows that it is important for the artist to be in all the media products. Also, both respondent 1 and 2 said that the greenery and nature also links them together well. Respondent 1 added that she likes that they aren’t all exactly the same as it would make it all boring.

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our music video, digipak and the advert have many things that link each media product with each other. The biggest link between the media products is the link with nature. The music video includes lots of shots of greenery, such as shots of trees to set the scene outside of Chelsea’s house, and shots of Chelsea singing, laying and walking around in a field. To make sure the link was prominent, we decided to take the photos for our ancillary texts in the same places and on the same day we filmed shots of our music video. The front cover of the digipak includes a picture of Chelsea on a field, linking it with shots from our music video. The pictures on our magazine adverts have trees in the background. The landscape advert shows Chelsea surrounded by leaves and branches coming from nearby trees, and the portrait advert shows Chelsea leaning on a tree.

Something that links the landscape advert and the music video is that, in the background of the advert, you can slightly see the exterior of the house from the music video. In the music video, we filmed both exterior shots and interior shots of the house, but on the advert, all you can see is the exterior of the house. This helps link the products, because someone may recognise the house in the advert as the house from the music video.

One thing that links the music video and the digipak is that they both include a pink rose. The pink rose is featured in a few different shots of the music video. It is shown in the vase of flowers near the beginning of the music video and also is shown being held by Chelsea when she is on the field. The digipak shows the pink rose on both the front cover and on a picture that is spread over three of the inserts. The front cover is a picture of Chelsea holding the rose whilst sitting on the field. The fact that she is sitting on the field whilst holding the rose makes the link stronger, as there are very similar shots in the music video. The picture that is spread across the inserts is just of the rose. We wanted to put a picture of just the rose as the background of some of our inserts because the rose was quite a significant part of the mise-en-scene in the music video.

After doing research for our magazine adverts, we saw that a lot of adverts had the album front cover on the advert somewhere. We decided this would be a good way to link our products together, and so we put the album cover on our adverts too. This helps to link the two products together as once people see the advert, they will then know what to look for in the shop if they want to buy it.

Another thing that links all three products is the font used on the text. We used the same font every time we had to write the titles of the song and the artist’s name, to keep it consistent, which was used across all of our media products. It was used at the beginning of our music video, on the front cover of our digipak and on both of our magazine adverts. We also used it for other text that was important. For example, we used it for our track list and the title of ‘acknowledgements’ on our digipak, and used it for ‘Out Now’ on our magazine advert. This helps for people to link our products together, as they may see two of our media products and automatically link them together due to using the same font.

An obvious thing that links all of our products together is that Chelsea is in each product. She is the star of the music video, she is on both of the magazine adverts and she is also on the front cover of the album. Some artists do not always show their faces on all products, and so it does not link well together, but having the artist on every media product helps to link them all together.

There is also something that links together the two ancillary texts. On both products, we put logos of the companies Chelsea is with, Syco and Sony. On the magazine adverts, we put the logos of the companies at the bottom of the posters and on the digipak, we put it on the back cover, next to the copyright. This helps to link the products together, as it shows they are both from the same companies.

In each of the products, Chelsea is wearing the same outfit. As we took the photos and filmed the music video on the same day, Chelsea was wearing the same outfit for both. She is wearing a casual costume that we planned for her to wear throughout scenes of her when she is walking through the fields. This helps link the products together.

Evaluatin Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We created three different media products for our course work, which all mainly use conventional aspects of real media products. We created one primary media product and two secondary media products, which both link with the primary media product. Our primary media product was a music video, using the song ‘Meant to Be’ by Chelsea Watts. Our secondary media products were a digipak, for the soundtrack that the song belongs to, and a promotional advert for the soundtrack and song. Our music video mainly consisted of conventional aspects whereas our digipak and advert developed conventional aspects of real life media products.

Music Video
The song we used for our music video was a pop song, about a break up and so we decided to make a music video with narrative instead of making an abstract music video, as this was more conventional. The narrative was linked to the lyrics of the song, and so was also about a break up and how the artist was dealing with it. This links with Andrew Goodwin’s Six Features of a Music Video as there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. An example of this is when the artist, Chelsea, is lying on her bed as the lyrics ‘as we lie here alone’ are sung. Another example is when Chelsea is throwing playing cards at the camera as the lyrics ‘you’re not into playing games’ is sung. This links because playing cards are a type of game. Carol Vernallis states, in her music video theory, that whatever is happening on screen will match with whatever the song and lyrics are about and so this is conventional of a real music video, as most narrative’s match with the lyrics/meaning of a song. An example real life music video could be Hair by Little Mix. In this music video, one of the artists, Leigh-Anne, is going through a sort of break up. When she finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her she calls her friends to tell them. This is done by using the lyrics of the song as her dialogue and background vocals, by other members of her group, is used as their responses.

Another convention we used was focusing on the artist. We used many close up’s of Chelsea and had no one else star in the music video, which showed that she was the main part of the video. This also links with Andrew Goodwin’s Six Features of a Music Video as focusing on the artist is one of the features he explained. A real life example of this is Ariana Grande’s music video for Dangerous Woman. This is because throughout the whole music video, the camera focuses on her and there are many close ups of her. This also ties in with Carol Vernallis’ theory, as she thought that close up’s of the artist were an important part of a music video.

In most music videos, there is change of costumes/outfits as the music video progresses. This is usually to show that the artist/character is either in a different place or it’s set at a different time. An example from our media product is when Chelsea changes outfits to show that it is the evening (wearing a dressing gown) and that it is day (wearing casual clothes). She also wears a different outfit when singing in the field and when looking in the mirror. This is a conventional use of usual media products. An example from real life music videos could be Black Magic by Little Mix. In this music video the artists are playing four girls who are very shy and nerdy, so they dress in typical ‘nerd’ clothing. They then use magic to become more confident in themselves, and to show this newfound confidence, their costumes change into something more fashionable.

We used a lot of break in narrative, which is also a convention that most music videos use. In our music video, our breaks in narrative were when it went from clips of Chelsea in her house to clips of Chelsea in the field singing. An example of this could be in the music video Castle On The Hill by Ed Sheeran. The narrative in the video is about Ed when he was younger, and shows him messing around with his mates but throughout the video, there are occasional breaks of narrative to a present day Ed who is singing the song.

Most break up music videos end being in the same state as the beginning and usually ends up with the character being sad, but we decided we wanted the artist to be happy. This meant that the music video slowly progresses from the character being sad to being OK and quite happy. We used flowers to represent the mood of the music video, so in the beginning the vase were slowly losing flowers until there was only one dead one left, but this quickly changed. As the mood of the song and music video became happier, the flowers quickly started coming back. This represents that the characters mood was slowly going down but when she realised they could get back together the mood become happier. This develops conventions a little, as it still has a typical narrative of a break up song at the start, but then she becomes happier.

We challenged conventions as we did not use male gaze for our music video. A lot of music videos by female artists have the artist wearing revealing clothes or doing things that would attract a male’s attention to them and objectify them. We decided not to do this as it didn’t go well with what the song was about, and we didn’t think it was necessary.

Digipak and CD Cover

For the CD Cover, we used mid shot of Chelsea holding a pink rose. This links with the music video, as there are also pink roses in the video.  This is conventional because most CD covers for songs match with their music videos for consistency. A real life example of this is Little Mix’s album, Glory Days. The cover photo is from the same place that their video for Shout Out To My Ex is shot. This links the video with their album cover. We also did not use any male gaze on the CD cover either, as we wanted it to link with the music video and there was no male gaze in the music video.

We developed the convention of putting lyrics in a separate booklet insert, in the digipak. Instead, we put the lyrics of ‘Meant to Be’ on the same insert of the digipak, instead of in a separate booklet. A real life example of a lyric booklet is in Little Mix’s album, Get Weird. It has lyrics of every song in the booklet, but we decided we only wanted lyrics for Meant to Be as it was the main song, and the song that links with the music video and promotional advert.

Meant To Be Lyric Insert
Get Weird Booklet

Another convention that we developed was adding more than three songs to the track list of a CD cover for a single. Usually when a CD comes out for a single song, it usually has a few extra songs with it, and sometimes even none. We decided to develop this and add four extra songs, making there to be five songs in total on the track list.

Magazine Advert

We decided to use a picture of the CD cover on the poster, to actually show the product instead of just speaking about it. This is conventional because a lot of artists put the CD cover on the advert. An example of this is Adele’s promotional poster for 21.

The background picture for the advert was from the same photoshoot as the CD cover picture, which helps link the two media products. This is conventional as most promotional adverts do this too. An example of this is Rihanna’s promotional advert for LOUD. We also developed the convention of the picture being a close up/mid-shot of the artist. This usually shows that the artist is the main thing you should be focussing on, but we decided we wanted to use a long shot. This was so we could also include the nature side of the picture, which helps link with the music video. This links with the music video because there are lots of shots of trees in the video. LOUD is also an example for close-ups/mid-shots of the artist.

Final Feedback

Feedback From Final Product

We decided that our target audience would be about 14 - 30, and so mainly wanted to get feedback from that age group, but we also decided to get feedback from other age ranges to compare and see if our decision about the target audience age was right.

Feedback Questions and Answers:

Music Video

1. What genre do you think the music video belongs to?
2. What do you think of the camera work?
3. What do you think of the editing?
4. What do you think of the mise-en-scene?
5. What was your favourite part and why?
6. What was your least favourite part and why? (Ext - What would you change?)

Audio Link to Feedback From Artist

Respondent 1: Female, 18

1.       It’s kind of a mix between pop and r&b because it’s got quite bright colours at times but then also it’s quite a ‘slow’ music video because usually pop music videos jump out in your face a lot whereas this one doesn’t as much
2.       I think it’s great. I really like the camerawork at the beginning. I think it fits the song really well.
3.       I really like the part where the flowers start to disappear and then at the end of the song where it gets positive again then they reappear! Also, the editing goes to the beat of the song so that makes the music video even more enjoyable to watch.
4.       I guess it was good because it was natural and no ridiculous costumes or a setting which was completely irrelevant to the song being sung so that was good. And the use brighter and then duller colours was pretty nice as well
5.       I really like the beginning part where it’s the shots of the trees because as Ive already said, its fits with the song and also I like how it ends on the shot of the house and then it continues in her house I found pretty smart, and also I love those parts where the flowers are disappearing and reappearing as its symbolic of their love
6.       The part where shes running around on the field because I don't understand the point of that.

Respondent 2: Female, 63

1.       Pop music, because the girl in the video is young and associate younger people with pop music. Even though the song has sad words, it’s quite upbeat.
2.       I loved the shots of the trees and how it was filmed. Thought it was atmospheric. I liked the angles of when she was lying on the grass.
3.       The flowers wilting and then coming alive again. It represented a love that is over and maybe a chance to start again. The words of the music matched with what she was doing/thinking and so it was edited in sequence to the song.
4.       I thought the lighting, when she opened the door to find flowers on the doorstep, matched how she was feeling. I think the props helped to tell the story.
5.       My favourite part was the flowers wilting and blossoming again because it represented a love that’s over and that can be reignited.
6.       My least favourite part was the bit where she was drinking the booze because it didn’t look real. I thought it would have been better in a wine glass with fake alcohol that looks real. It would have been more realistic that she was drowning her sorrows.

Respondent 3: Male, 62

1.       Pop because it sounds upbeat
2.       I think it was excellent because it had nice angles and everything was in focus.
3.       I thought it was good how the flowers died and came back to life. It explained what needed to be explained well.
4.       I liked the outside scenes, the greenery and the scenery but I thought the inside scenery could have been done with better background, for example, it could have been done on something better than a kitchen worktop.
5.       My favourite part was when she was outside and she was singing because the lip syncing was good.
6.       My least favourite part was that there was no background to the flowers. It would have been better in a bedroom.

Digipak

7. What do you like about the front cover? And why?
8. What did you like least about the front cover? And why?
9. Would you think of buying this digipak if you saw it in a shop? Why?
10. Is the design of this digipak what you would expect for this song?
11. What do you think about the inserts on the digipak?
Additional Question: What do you think of the back cover?

Audio Link to Feedback From Artist

Respondent 1: Female, 18

7.       What I like about the front cover is how the writing isn’t right in the middle and you can see that shes holding the rose and her face which is from the music video. I also like how the title is noticeable
8.       I would have expected it to have more brighter colours, so the dullness of the colours I guess
9.       Yeah I would because its an interesting front cover and I love the sheet with the lyrics
10.   Yes since the song is about love and it has a rose inside and the back of it is pink
11.    I like the rose and the colour of the inserts because they match (the grey and pink) and I like the font used for acknowledgments.
Additional Question: The logos are well placed and the barcode is in a good place. I like the use of the pink/grey gradient colour however the track list is not very exciting as it’s just there on the side… but I do like the font used for the track list. I think it goes well with it all.
Respondent 2: Female, 63

7.       I like it because the angle of her face. I like the fact that she is looking up and not towards the camera. Her name is very clearly written. I like her facial expression because it shows she is in thought. I would be drawn to this album.
8.       I can’t think of anything I don’t like. I think it’s quite nice.
9.       Not for me because it’s promoting an image of a younger audience, but I would still be intrigued because it’s very eye catching.
10.   Yes because it’s got pink and a pink rose and the theme of the song is love. These colours represent love in my opinion.
11.    I liked that the lyrics of the song are included. I also like the rose because it looks like the same rose from the front cover and so it matches the rest of the digipak. I like the acknowledgements because it shows gratitude for everyone involved in the making of it.
Additional Question: I like the logos because it stands out. I like the track list because it shows you additional songs on this album, but the main one is wrote under her name so you know that it’s the main song.

Respondent 3: Male, 62

7.       I like Chelsea’s pose and expression. I like the background because it makes Chelsea stand out. The name stands out well because it’s across dark colours and the word colouring is light.
8.       I like it all.
9.       If I knew her and her music, it would make me want to buy it more because of the way its set out. If I didn’t know her, I would want to listen to it straight away. I’d only buy it if I liked the music though.
10.   Yes because it’s girlish and it’s a girly type design but it’s very nice.
11.    I think the back part is good because the lyrics are on there and so you can sing along. I like the acknowledgments.
Additional Question: It’s clearly set out. I think it’s good that you put copyright, logos and barcode on it.

Respondent 1: Female, 18

12.    I like how it has the CD cover of it on both of them and the places where you can listen, like iTunes and Spotify! Also, I like how the pictures of Chelsea are relating to the music video as that’s what people memorise the most, so it gets people’s attention
13.    I feel like the cover of the CD and the ‘out now’ should be more in the centre as it makes it more noticeable there.
14.    I prefer the landscape one because it’s nicer to look at because the portrait one is more just the picture of Chelsea whereas the mise-en-scene in the second one is much nicer and it would make me want to check out what the advertisement is advertising
15.    I don’t think the portrait advertisement would compel me to buy it because it looks like an advertisement for clothes if you don’t notice the album, rather than an advertisement for the album but I think the second one would make me want to buy it.

16.    It’s all linked well with the theme of those trees and the outside, and they all include Chelsea so I think they go pretty well and they’re not exactly the same which is good because then it would make it all boring
 Respondent 2: Female, 63

12.    I like the landscape one because of the sun shining through the trees which gives it a dream like quality. I also liked that it shows where you can find the song/album. I like that it says ‘out now’ because it shows it’s a new release.
13.    I think when she’s face on to the camera, it doesn’t seem to go with the lyrics to the song whereas when she’s looking away, it matches the lyrics more.
14.    I prefer the landscape one better because I think it looks like she’s thinking about her lost love, which links with the song. Also, she is reaching up to the branches of the tree like she is in thought.
15.    If I was buying for a younger person, then this would compel me to buy this album as it seems like something for an age range younger than myself, but for me personally, it would not attract me to buy it to take home for myself.

16.    It all linked together well because they all Chelsea and she is also wearing the same outfit for each media product. The greenery also links the three media products together and you can also see that it’s the same setting in each.
Respondent 3: Male, 62

12.    It’s clearly Chelsea Watts – Meant To Be. You can see what the song is on (eg. iTunes).
13.    I don’t like the background of the landscape one. It doesn’t show Chelsea very well.
14.    I prefer the portrait one because its very clear, it tells you what it is (advertising Meant To Be). The landscape is not clear enough and does not look like an advert. I do not like that it’s bright on one side and dark on the other.
15.    No because I would only buy due to liking the song.

16.    I think it went well together because Chelsea is in all of them.
